LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a consumer alert Thursday, warning students and families about fake college and university websites designed to steal personal information and money.
The alert comes after a complaint from Eastern Michigan University (EMU), which reported that a website using the name “Southeastern Michigan University" used the domain "smich.education." The website was attempting to capitalize on EMU’s reputation to attract prospective students around the world, according to Nessel. The site is not affiliated with EMU.
While the Michigan Department of Attorney General is considering legal action against the fraudulent website, Nessel is urging caution for anyone considering online college programs.
