BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) -- A man was killed after his vehicle struck two trees Thursday evening in Bertie County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash happened on Ashland Church Road near Black Rock Road around 8:55 p.m.

The victim has been identified as 42-year-old Derrick Spruill of Merry Hill, North Carolina.

Spruill was driving a 2003 Hyundai Sonata when he traveled off the roadway and struck a tree. He then came back onto the roadway, crossed the centerline, traveled off the roadway and struck another tree.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Spruill was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.
