Residents and some Thornton City Council members have denounced two of their own because they turned their backs to a resident who was speaking during public hearings items of a July 22 council meeting, saying their conduct was disrespectful and likely violated council rules.

“What in the hell were you thinking?” resident Steven Mathias publicly said to the two protesting council members – Tony Unrein and David Acunto. “I am disgusted and ashamed about how the council members acted,” added councilmember Cherish Salazar, who then apologized to the speaker, Dariush Namazi.

“I don’t care if you don’t like someone or don’t like what they have to say, as an elected official that behavior is unacceptable,” said Mayor Pro Tem Karen Bigelow via text.
