Parking a bicycle in the 529 Garage will lower the chance of it being stolen and heighten the chance of it being recovered if it does get swiped, a new Waterloo Regional Police initiative touts.
Dubbed Project 529, Waterloo Regional Police have partnered with the J Allard-owned software company — Allard spent 20 years at Microsoft where he co-founded Xbox — to launch a free bicycle registration program allowing users to log in and trigger a community-wide alert when their bicycle is stolen, increasing the chance for recovery.
When registering with 529 Garage, bicycle owners can upload as much information as they are comfortable with, including the bike’s serial number, photos and ownership information. An email address and photo will suffice, said Rob Brunt, chief outreach officer at 529
