DETROIT, MI — A state judge has blocked a controversial Republic Services landfill in Wayne County from receiving new shipments of radioactive waste.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Kevin Cox signed an injunction this week barring the Wayne Disposal Inc landfill in Van Buren Township from accepting low-level radioactive waste called TENORM from federal cleanup sites in five states.

Cox found the risk of harm to surrounding communities “substantial and compelling” from the potential import of waste from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers cleanups in Ohio, Iowa, New Jersey, New York and Missouri.

The states are home to Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) sites undergoing cleanup. The waste includes materials that were produced for weapons, early atomic energy and oth
