A wildfire that sparked south of The Dalles on Thursday evening quickly grew to 485 acres, prompting officials to issue Level 3 (Go Now) evacuation orders, before firefighters successfully contained the blaze.

The Steele Road fire ignited around 4:50 p.m. near the Wasco County Landfill on Steele Road. No infrastructure or homes were damaged during the fire, according to Adam Cole, Mid-Columbia Fire & Rescue’s division chief.

Level 2 (Be Set) and Level 3 (Go Now) evacuation orders were lifted by the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office Thursday night. Level 1 (Be Ready) evacuation orders remain in place from west of Steele Road to Highway 197 and Five Mile Road.
