Angeline McKinney-Craig was driving home from an appointment Thursday when she saw the aftermath of the horrific crash: cars mashed up, a shocked crowd gathering.
She pulled over and parked, wanting to check if everyone was okay. This was her neighborhood. Then her phone rang: a voice she didn’t recognize was telling her she had to pick up her son.
McKinney-Craig proceeded a couple blocks south on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, where she saw a man sprawled in the street. It was DaRon Craig, 49, her former husband.
Approaching, McKinney-Craig became overcome with the feeling that none of it was real, she said later. She put her hand on Craig’s face while paramedics attempted to resuscitate him.
“Try again,” she told the paramedics. “Please try again.”
