BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) - A serious medical emergency occurred at the Boyd County Detention Center on Aug. 7 during routine prisoner intake procedures, according to Boyd County Jailer William D. Hensley.

Hensley said they believe a deputy experienced a serious medical emergency after possibly being exposed an unknown substance while conducting routine prisoner intake procedures in the facility’s sally port.

The deputy experienced severe symptoms, including physical weakness and seizure-like activity, he said.

After being taken to a local hospital, the deputy suffered respiratory failure but was successfully resuscitated, according to Hensley.

He said no oxygen loss occurred and that the deputy is currently in a medically induced coma but appears in stable condition.
