The breakout star of this summer’s “Superman” movie didn’t come from the Planet Krypton.

Instead, the dog that inspired superdog Krypto was adopted from a Riverside County animal shelter

“Superman” director James Gunn’s own dog, Ozu, inspired the film’s portrayal of Krypto, he told attendees at Cinemacon in April.

Gunn told the Cinemacon audience that Ozu was an emotionally damaged rescue dog, according to Variety . Ozu would reportedly run away from Gunn, destroy his furniture and electronics and attack Gunn’s feet during conference calls, forcing him to climb onto the kitchen counter to escape.

“I didn’t know if he was playing or he hated my guts,” USA Today quoted Gunn as saying at Cinemacon.
