Search crews have recovered the body of the 6-year-old boy who fell into the Housatonic River in Stratford on Wednesday, according to police.

The boy fell into the river while walking on the Birdseye Boat Ramp around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, police said.

A United Illuminating employee jumped into the river to try to save him, but the child did not resurface.

Officials have not identified the little boy, but said he was from Stratford and his father lives in Bridgeport.

Police said the boy’s mother was with him when he fell into the water. She was taken to the hospital and has since been released.
