The fire ban was enacted at 4 p.m. Friday, following a series of discussions with fire chiefs from across the region “to develop a co-ordinated approach to prioritize public safety,” a media release said.

Backyard fires and open burns are not permitted due to current dry conditions and no significant rainfall forecast, the city said. No new open burn permits will be issued or approved until further notice.

Unauthorized fires may result in fines and other charges under city bylaw and the Ontario Fire Code.

The fire ban will stay in effect until further notice.
