PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - The Peoria Zoo is celebrating the birth of a baby mandrill.

The unnamed baby, born July 30, joins mother Kofola, dad Linus, sister River and “aunt” Tara. While the baby’s gender hasn’t been confirmed yet, the zoo said mom Kofola is doing a fantastic job and is keeping the newborn close.

Kofola joined the zoo on July 2, 2022, from the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. Dad Linus joined her on Feb. 17, 2023, as part of a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Sister River was born on Aug. 19, 2023.

The zoo said mandrills are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. The biggest threats for wild mandrills include hunting for meat and habitat destruction from agriculture, mining, road construction and drilling for oil and gas.
