A fast-growing brush fire is forcing thousands of people to evacuate in a mountainous area north of Los Angeles.

The Canyon Fire ignited Thursday afternoon and grew to more than 7.6 square miles by Thursday night and remained uncontained.

It was spreading east into Los Angeles County, where officials say around 2,700 residents evacuated with 700 structures under an evacuation order.

Another 14,000 residents and 5,000 structures were covered by an evacuation warning. The blaze is in a mountainous area close to the burn area of the Hughes Fire.

That fire broke out in January and forced 50,000 people to be put under evacuation orders or warnings.
