Now in its sixth month, the strike in the Cowichan Valley transit system will continue on, with the workers rejecting a proposal to proceed to binding arbitration.
Gavin Davies, national Unifor representative representing the workers for Locals 114 and 133, says workers ultimately rejected the proposal over concerns they would not be able to address their main concerns.
“The members didn’t feel that proceeding through that avenue would address some of, if not all of, the core issues that have led to this labour dispute,” Davies said in a Zoom interview.
Davies says the main concerns are wages and securing adequate bathroom facilities.
For wages, Davies says the workers are hoping to close the gap between what their counterparts in Nanaimo and Victoria are making.
