ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - DeKalb County has renamed Ellenwood Park in honor of a trailblazing florist and business manager.

The park was renamed Thursday in honor of Dr. Alice White Bussey. Bussey was the Labor Department’s first federal representative of the state and the first female president of the Atlanta Business League. She died earlier this year.

Her roots in the community trace back six generations.

Crews spent weeks clearing the space as well as adding playground equipment and a retention pond.

The project cost more than $2 million.
