Those Amazon boxes could come in handy.

That’s because two-person teams will be competing in some of the most unusual vessels when Port Colborne hosts its first-ever Cardboard Boat Races.

Taking place at Sugarloaf Marina, the Aug. 30 event challenges participants to design, build and race cardboard boats across the marina lagoon using only basic materials.

No motors, no flotation aids and no waterproof sealants are allowed.

The city said boats must be made from cardboard and be held together with glue, caulking, tape or similar materials.

Paddles and mandatory personal flotation devices — life-jackets — will be provided for participants.

Competitors must arrive with their boats already built and ready to race. While creativity is encouraged, safety is key.
