NEW ORLEANS — A resident of Orleans Parish has been diagnosed with West Nile virus.

The City of New Orleans said that the resident has the neuroinvasive form of the disease.

It is the first human case reported in the parish this year.

West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

"The primary vector of West Nile virus in our region is the southern house mosquito, , which is most active after dark," the City of New Orleans said in a statement.

Officials are asking residents to limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, use EPA-approved insect repellents, and mosquito-proof their homes by maintaining screens on windows and doors.
