INDIANAPOLIS — Scammers like to go phishing.

While their version starts with the letters "ph," the act works like the sport.

Robert Elliott with Check Point Software said just like a fish might bite a hook with the proper bait on it, scammers aim to get the right thing in front of you at the right time to entice you to click.

Sometimes the bait is a familiar name and a fake site like this one his researchers found:

"What they do is they impersonate a brand that will get you on the hook," Elliott said.

The most-impersonated companies, according to Check Point Software , include Microsoft, Google, Apple, Spotify and Adobe.

"If they send 10 million phishing emails out, if they get .01% of that [number] to do what they want, that's a win for them, right?" Elliott said.
