HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WSAV) - One Lowcountry hospital celebrated 50 years of taking care of their community Friday.

Hilton Head Hospital was founded in 1975 by a group of people who saw the need to good health care of a then growing island of Hilton Head.

Dr. Peter LaMotte, a former chief of trauma in orthopedic surgery at Roosevelt Hospital in New York, and local attorney William Bethea, Jr. hatched a plan to build a hospital on the island almost 10 years prior.

The goal was to serve the growing community of Hilton Head Island, many of whom were retirees or older.

Now the medical facility is a key component of the community, serving thousands of people every year.

Novant Health, the owner of the hospital, was joined by Town and County leaders along with current and former hospital
