AUSTIN, Texas — As students prepare to return to school, Lockhart Independent School District has announced all students will be required to carry clear backpacks during the upcoming school year.

The policy change follows a February incident where a student brought a firearm to Lockhart Junior High School . Although no threats were made, the district responded by implementing a clear backpack requirement at the junior high campus during the spring semester. That policy will now extend to all campuses district-wide.

Superintendent Mark Estrada said the decision was influenced by parent concerns and a desire to provide an added layer of safety.
