Journeyman catcher Ali Sanchez, who played in the Detroit Tigers’ organization in 2022, was claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox on Friday.

Sánchez had been designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays. He has no options available, meaning the Red Sox will have to bring him directly to the big-league roster.

Sánchez, 28, played for Triple-A Toledo after being claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022. He was never called up to Detroit.

After spending 2023 with the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Triple-A affiliate, Sánchez signed a big-league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates ahead of the 2024 season. He was waived at the end of spring training and landed with the Chicago Cubs, playing for Triple-A Iowa before being traded to the Miami Marlins last June .
