NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) - The Neuse River bridge has become a hot spot for finding stranded kittens lately and the Craven County Sheriff’s Office Animal Protective Services (APS) has been stepping in to help.

“I ended up going to the location. The kitten had its little ears up and it was just on the side of the bridge, not moving, and I jumped out of my truck and jumped on top of the kitten,” APS director Amanda Schmitz said.

Schmitz rescued that kitten a few weeks ago, but on Thursday and Friday, two more kittens were called in by patrol deputies to come and rescue the kittens.

APS has received several calls about stray kittens within the Bridgeton-Neuse River bridge area and rescued five total, but others haven’t been as lucky.
