BERGEN, N.Y. — The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal two-car collision that occurred Friday afternoon on Route 33 in the Town of Bergen.

The Genesee County Emergency Dispatch Center received a 911 call at 12:25 p.m. reporting the crash. When patrols arrived, they found the driver of a 2013 blue Ford Focus dead at the scene, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

The man was identified as 39-year-old Joseph M. Meli of Batavia, who investigators said was traveling east when he attempted to pass another vehicle and struck a 2024 gold Hyundai Ioniq 5 head-on in the westbound lane.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 32-year-old woman from North Chili, was seriously injured and taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.
