WESTERN SLOPE, Colo. (KREX) - Wildfire mitigation can make or break the way your home will battle a fire, especially during a peak fire season in Colorado.

As House Bill 25-1009 allows fire protection districts to create programs to reduce dead vegetation that can cause fires on private property, there is some backlash from the bill.

“It will dictate levels of wildfire hazard in that community, construction capabilities and materials clearance capabilities, and different things of that nature. So right now, we're just starting to delve into what that's going to entail and the workload it's going to put upon our limited staff,” said Charles Balke, the fire chief for the Palisade Fire Department.
