BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Now that the first week for many students is over, a local school leader is sharing advice to prevent children from falling behind.
Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Walter Gonsoulin Jr. has visited five schools since students returned to the classroom on Thursday.
“I was telling someone today, this is my 36th first day of school,” Gonsoulin said. “I’ve done it 36 times and each time I get so excited. There’s nothing like seeing those smiles and faces of our faculty and staff, and also our students and to know that we have yet another shot at educating our children.”
There are a lot of students to teach. The superintendent said almost 30,000 students come out on the first day.
