PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Rhode Island-based nonprofit is working to help a U.S. Army sergeant, who has been battling cancer for nearly three years, receive a critical procedure.
After multiple surgeries, Sgt. First Class David Hong, of Colorado, has found a chance at survival through histotripsy — a non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment for his stage 4 colon cancer.
"I have nothing to lose I've tried so many different options I'm going to keep fighting," Hong told 12 News.
His insurance, Tricare, initially denied coverage for the surgery twice.
"It's because its still a trial treatment at the moment," Hong explained. "Doing less invasive [procedures] versus my first surgery that I had to do to remove part of my liver and part of my stomach wall that had the cancer. It was very invasi
