LAHAINA (HawaiiNewsNow) - The people of Maui have been through a lot, and still face a lot of challenges after two years of missteps and milestones.
Investigations concluded that the biggest misstep of all was the government’s lack of concern and preparation for known wildfire risk.
That left the community and first responders on their own to handle the crisis, which they did heroically.
Hawaii News Now found Kekoa Lansford in Lahaina on Aug. 9, 2023 , helping others. He’d returned after getting his own family out of harm’s way,
“Trying to save people’s lives and I feel like we are not getting the help we need you know, oh my God,” he’d cried.
That was an example of the anger and confusion evident after the fires destroyed homes in Kula and destroyed most of Lahaina.
