TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - Tucson Electric Power (TEP) customers set a new peak demand record earlier this week, driven by scorching temperatures.

On Aug. 6, the demand on TEP's grid reached 2,502 megawatts between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., surpassing the previous record from June 2021, officials said.

This summer's intense heat, with temperatures reaching 111 and 112 degrees, has led to increased energy usage across Arizona. Officials said despite an energy rate reduction in April, higher outdoor temperatures are likely the result in increased bills for TEP customers, as cooling systems work harder throughout the day and night.
