There were several reasons why the Hurricanes’ defense struggled in 2024. One that Mario Cristobal and former defensive coordinator Lance Guidry repeatedly emphasized was a lack of communication.

Cristobal brought in new defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman to fix that.

“We want our guys talking, and it’s every single time,” Hetherman said in April. “Hey, here’s the call, here’s what’s going on, and I want to hear all the communication. Where’s the front set? How are we lining up the defense? Exactly what call are we in right now? What’s your job? What’s your alignment? Where are your eyes? We always want our guys talking.
