TRAVERSE CITY — Loud bangs echoing off downtown Traverse City buildings were a signal that work on a two-way selective fish passageway is in a new phase.

Contractor Spence Brothers Construction reached the second phase of work within the Boardman-Ottaway River’s northern half, said Leah Bagdon McCallum, GLFC’s community engagement officer for FishPass. Construction crews drove 50-foot sections of sheet piling into the river upstream of the Union Street Dam’s main spillway, which soon will be removed.
