Holidaygoers and residents in the Canary Islands this week have been issued a rare red warning over soaring temperatures. Spain’s national weather agency, Aemet, has placed Fuertaventura, Lanzarote, the south of Gran Canaria and the south, north and east of Tenerife under an extreme temperature warning. ‌

Highs of 40C have been predicted with minimum temperatures not expected to drop below 30C. The warnings will come into force on Sunday August 10th and will last until August 14th, according to the Canary Islands Health Service. ‌

The areas affected by the red level warning include Tejeda and Vega de San Mateo, eastern, western and southern areas: Agüimes, Artenara, Ingenio, Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, La Aldea de San Nicolás, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Telde and V
