STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City’s first Sonic Drive-In arrived on Staten Island’s South Shore with a boom. This week, the location at 148 Page Ave. closed with a whimper.

The Oklahoma City-based company did not respond to questions by deadline. However, a person associated with the site said the closure is temporary and the restaurant is expected to reopen—still under the Sonic brand.

In the meantime, on Thursday, the billboard lights on Page Avenue remained lit. In the afternoon sun, the “Big Dill Meal” menu board still glowed, although the building was empty and brown paper covered the windows. A Department of Health and Mental Hygiene sign noted “Grade Pending.”
