There’s really nothing to compare to the flavour of a homegrown tomato, still warm from the summer sunshine.

Our little family of 10 tomato plants have all started to produce ripe fruit this week. While most of the plants only offer two or three nearly ripe fruits, the Sweet Million tomatoes have already produced bowls filled with sweet cherry-style tomatoes — it’s tomato salad season!

Every year I head out in the spring to search for a varied selection of tomatoes. My prerequisites are simple: they must taste delicious and be photogenic.

That may seem like an odd pairing, but if my crop only included red tomatoes, I wouldn’t be able to capture the colourful image shown with today’s column, and for me, sharing the image of my crop is part of the fun.
