Lambton public health is asking people to remain vigilant after a bat in Sarnia-Lambton tested positive for rabies.
The bat was tested earlier in the week as part of an investigation into potential animal exposure, public health officials said in a Friday news release.

“While the risk of acquiring rabies locally remains very low, this case highlights the importance of avoiding contact with wildlife, and taking other steps to prevent animal bites and scratches,” medical officer of health Dr. Karalyn Dueck said in a statement.
The viral disease is usually transmitted to humans via saliva from an infected animal, primarily through bites, a health unit press release says.
Scratches can also transmit rabies, but less commonly, officials said.
