When Dr. Dean Cauffman earned his veterinary license in July 1975, he had a newly purchased vet truck, a fresh diploma, and no listing in the phone book. He was honored last month at a celebration held at Stone Ridge Acres in McAlisterville, where he was recognized by Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding, Rep. Perry Stambaugh, and representatives from the offices of Sen. John Fetterman and David McCormick. He was also honored by Perry County commissioners during their July 28 meeting.
“I couldn’t advertise,” he recalled with a laugh. “Back then, doctors weren’t allowed to. So my first year or two was all word of mouth. Friends or neighbors would call me, I’d take care of their animals, and they’d tell their friends. Luckily, I still had the farm to keep me busy.”
