SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash — A Spokane County Sheriff’s Office sergeant lost their life Saturday after responding to a crash with a hay baler near Cheney.

According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the crash happened before 8 a.m. on Interstate 90 near Four Lakes.

Authorities identified the victim as Sgt. Kenneth Salas, 59, of Spokane. Troopers say a hay bale fell off the back of a truck & trailer heading towards Spokane and landed in the left lane.

Sgt. Salas stopped his patrol car to help clear the hay from the road, putting up emergency lights and a directional bar.

According to WSP, a motorcyclist failed to slow down and hit the sergeant’s patrol car while trying to pass it on the left. He then hit Sgt. Salas.
