SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. – A deadly crash on Interstate 90 eastbound near Four Lakes resulted in the death of 59-year-old Spokane County Sergeant Kenneth Salas, prompting closures in the eastbound lanes.

The incident happened at 7:49 a.m. on Saturday morning, four miles north of Cheney. According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), a hay bale was lost from the trailer of a Ram truck traveling eastbound on I-90, near milepost 270. After coming to a stop, the hay bale was reportedly obstructing the left lane of the roadway.

Sergeant Salas observed the hazard and parked his patrol vehicle in front of it, activating emergency lights and a directional bar before attempting to clear the hay from the left lane.
