GRAND FORKS — An EF-1 tornado touched down on Grand Forks' south side early Friday morning, Aug. 8, the National Weather Service has confirmed. It was one of four confirmed tornadoes in the Grand Forks area that night.

No injuries were reported in Grand Forks, but the NWS did confirm one person was injured in an earlier tornado near Manvel. Information about that incident was not immediately available Saturday night.

An EF-1 tornado is characterized by wind speeds of 86 mph to 110 mph. The Grand Forks tornado reached speeds of 100 mph, according to preliminary NWS reports released Saturday evening. The tornado is believed to have touched down briefly and intermittently in the city starting at 4:14 a.m. in the I-29 and 32nd Avenue area on the south end of the city, then moving northeast
