Roman bravely climbing the stairs to a plane for the first time ever
My father, Roman Boratyn , has always been adamant about his aversion to air travel. Now 70, he's often said: "The first time I go on a plane will be my last."
A resident of Poland , he's an enthusiast for car journeys and train rides, ranking aeroplanes near the bottom of his preferred modes of transport - only boats fare worse. He's often heard saying: "And at least on a boat, if something goes wrong, you can swim."
However, life had other plans. Desiring to visit my wife and me in the UK, he decided that this was "more important than the very real risk of death on a plane". Thus, after a lifetime of avoiding airports, he booked his inaugural flight - a Ryanair journey from the picturesque Polish city
