Four historic "tall ship" sailing vessels known as schooners are visiting Detroit this weekend, providing visitors a chance to see and feel how the world traveled two centuries ago.
As part of the Tall Ship Challenge, the ships, "The Alliance,” "Empire Sandy, "Ernestina-Morrissey" and "Pride of Baltimore II," are visiting Detroit through Aug. 10. They arrived Aug. 7. The vessels travel around the world to teach people the history of sailing and what it is like to live and work on a boat.
If a visit to the Detroit RiverWalk this weekend doesn't provide you your fill of historic vessels, don't despair. Michigan is home to more than a half dozen historic vessels from the age of sails to steam and diesel power that you can visit and tour.
Among Michigan's historic vessels are the USS Si
