The Naperville School District 203 Board on Monday advanced plans to build a new transportation operations facility and remove the existing trailer that officials say has exceeded its lifespan.

The new transportation facility will be built on the same 5th Avenue property and cost between $14.8 million to $17.4 million from savings accrued over time. District policy allows the board to use its fund balance for one-time capital projects that otherwise could not be done during its annual budget.

While still in a conceptual phase, the tentative plans call for a 4,000-square-foot transportation department office and a 6,000-square-foot garage to serve bus drivers, office staff and mechanics.
