On what would have been his 69th birthday, Niagara Falls cycling icon Gord Singleton became part of Whirlpool Road Saturday.
For the road’s official public reopening after an extensive upgrade, Singleton was honoured with a commemorative sign at the Whirlpool Road and Stanley Avenue intersection.
A highly decorated cyclist, Singleton was named the city’s athlete of the century in 2004. He died of cancer early last year at 67.
The new street sign is especially appropriate for Whirlpool Road, said Singleton’s son Chris. He and his dad used to frequently ride their bikes together here.
“On this road, we’d either be going out to the (Niagara) Parkway or coming home,” he said. “I can’t count the amount of times that we rode together down this road.”
