A 3-year-old girl was found dead in a car in Milford, Maine, on Saturday, and her mother has been charged with manslaughter.

State police said the child was discovered by members of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office. An autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Police had been looking for the child and her mother, who was found nearby, after concerned family members requested a welfare check. The mother, 40-year-old Kelly Brown of Havertown, Pennsylvania, was detained and later charged with manslaughter.

Maine State Police continue to investigate. Few additional details were immediately available.
