RALEIGH, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Red Wolf Recovery Program in North Carolina has confirmed the birth of four wild litters of Red Wolf pups.
Officials said the pups were born on the Albemarle Peninsula, home to the only population of wild Red Wolves.
Officials said that five Red Wolf pairs are currently spread across the peninsula with an estimated population of around 18 adults and 16 pups.
An increase in private landowner partnerships, SAFE facilities and external partnerships have allowed the recovery program to expand while supporting the needs of Red Wolves on the landscape, according to officials.
Defenders of Wildlife officials said the organization has been involved in Red Wolf recovery since the 1980s through a combination of advocacy, public education and litigation.
