System Near Cabo Verde Islands Has High Chance of Development; Heavy Rainfall and Gusty Winds Expected
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is closely monitoring a well-defined low-pressure system in the eastern tropical Atlantic that is highly likely to develop into a tropical depression. According to a Sunday update, satellite-derived wind data indicates the low has formed about midway between the west coast of Africa and the Cabo Verde Islands, with maximum sustained winds of approximately 35 mph.
While the associated thunderstorms and showers still lack full organization, forecasters believe only a small increase in structure is needed for the system to become a tropical depression. This could happen as soon as tonight or Monday as the low moves near or over the Cabo Verde Islands.
