About 25 University of Colorado Boulder researchers have been laid off this year due to a lack of funding for research projects at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The laid-off employees worked for CU Boulder’s CIRES, or the Cooperative Institute for Research In Environmental Sciences. CIRES has a cooperative agreement with NOAA where CU Boulder researchers work side-by-side with NOAA researchers in NOAA labs in Boulder to study the environment. Kari Bowen, the program manager for the cooperative agreement between CU Boulder and NOAA, said the employees were laid off when their research projects stopped receiving federal funding.
