The Bayonne Police Department has its first therapy dog, Seamus, in a new community relations program.
Officer Shannon Dwyer, who is the department’s first female K-9 handler, is the owner of Seamus.
Seamus has received specialized training to assist individuals dealing with trauma, mental health challenges, and the aftermath of crime, city officials said.
The initiative represents a new approach to community policing, with Seamus and Officer Dwyer set to appear at various public events including street fairs, concerts, and school visits.
According to the department, the program was developed to enhance their ability to respond compassionately to distressing situations.
Therapy canines will serve as a resource for outreach and engagement, working to build trust and promote wellness wi
