When most people hear “superintendent,” they usually envision a person in charge of a school district — not emerald cucumbers and heirloom tomatoes.
But at the Deerfield Fair, which this year will be held Sept. 25-28 Eric Stevens proudly holds the unusual title of fruit and vegetable superintendent — a job that comes with its own office, a full plate of responsibilities, and deep roots in family tradition.
As superintendent, Stevens oversees the colorful and competitive produce displays that attract hundreds of entries in 131 different categories, drawing throngs of visitors every year. He also manages the giant pumpkin contest, serves on the fair’s board of directors, and chairs the campground committee.
