DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have placed outfielder Matt Vierling on the injured list with a strained left oblique, the latest blow in his injury-riddled season.

Shortstop Trey Sweeney was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take Vierling’s roster spot.

Vierling hit his first home run of the season to lead the Tigers to a come-from-behind win on Friday . But Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said he was sent for tests Saturday night after dealing with some persistent discomfort.

“He’s had some intermittent soreness, which is normal in August, and he’s obviously been playing, including the homer the other night and the bullet yesterday to right field,” Hinch said. “But every time he would miss or check swing, he had some sort of treatable issue in that area.
