Baker City man died in a logging accident Thursday afternoon, Aug. 7, in the Wallowa Mountains near Lily White Guard Station.

Jeremiah Alan Dayhoff , 38, was pronounced dead when other employees brought him to Baker City, said Ashley McClay, public information officer for the Baker County Sheriff’s Office.

Medical examiner Deon Strommer confirmed that Dayhoff had died, McClay said on Friday morning, Aug. 8.

“It’s just a tragedy,” McClay said.

Dayhoff was working with NSEA Timber on a logging project near the guard station, which is west of Eagle Creek and northeast of Balm Creek Reservoir, McClay said.

He was setting chokers — connecting metal cables to fallen logs — when he stepped on one log and slipped to the ground. A second log rolled on top of Dayhoff, McClay said.
